Così fan tutte remains just as controversial as it was when it first shocked audiences in 1790. For her debut on the main stage, Netia Jones, Associate Director of The Royal Opera, gives a new interpretation to Mozart’s comedy of manners by viewing it from a critical contemporary perspective, in which 18th-century romantic intrigues combine with highly satirical high-tech deception. A sparkling young cast shines in the roles of the lovers, starring Louise Alder, Simone McIntosh, Mingjie Lei, and Huw Montague Rendall, while Gerald Finley portrays the manipulative master of ceremonies Don Alfonso and Emily Pogorelc takes on the role of Despina. Thomas Hengelbrock conducts, doing justice to the beautiful melodies upon which the provocative and highly modern themes of this opera are based.
