Our Land
When he and two accomplices serve an eviction notice to the Chuschagasta community of 300 people, a confrontation erupts that ends in the killing of 68-year-old community leader Javier Chocobar. The act is captured on video, but it takes nine years of protests before the perpetrators are brought to court. For Amín and his accomplices, the dispute over the land is purely a business matter, while for the Chuschagasta community their roots, identity, and survival are at stake.
Urgent, uncompromising and ambitious, Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (Zama, La Ciénaga) explores a tragic true story from multiple perspectives in her first non-fiction work Our Land: the murder trial of the three men, the life of Chocobar and his fellow Chuschagasta, and the centuries-old colonial legacy of exploitation, land theft, and dispossession across Latin America. The result is a crime documentary that is both narratively gripping and a deeply sensory cinematic experience. Martel worked on Our Land for fourteen years before its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The documentary received international acclaim and was awarded in Locarno, London, and the United States.
