Islands

Jan-Ole Gerster
RELEASE Thu 16 Oct

Tom is a charismatic, good-natured man who works as a tennis coach at a beautiful all-inclusive resort in Fuerteventura. The guests enjoy their luxurious stay, but Tom is bored by his daily, superficial routine of teaching, going out, and one-night stands. Chronically hungover, he keeps people at bay until the Maguire family checks into the resort.

Anne and Dave insist that Tom tutor their son privately, take him out to dinner, and Tom gradually becomes more involved in the family and their problems. After a night out with Dave, Tom learns the next morning that Dave has disappeared.

Islands is an intense, brooding psychological thriller and the English debut of German director Jan-Ole Gerster. Oh Boy (2012) with Tom Schilling was his successful debut film, and Gerster's second film, Lara (2019), also received multiple awards. In the ominous Islands, nothing is as it seems, and Gerster shows that you can't escape your problems, even on vacation. Starring Sam Riley (Control, Firebrand), Stacy Martin (The Brutalist), and Jack Farthing (Spencer, The Lost Daughter). Islands had its world premiere at this year's Berlinale and won the award for Best Film Score at the German Film Awards.
