In Memoriam | Dolly Parton

9 to 5
Sun 13 Sep 19:45

In memory of Dolly Parton, we present 9 to 5 on Sunday 13 September, the razor-sharp office comedy that marked her film debut. Together with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, she takes on a sexist boss with humour, solidarity and a title song that became an anthem.

On Sunday 13 September, we honour Dolly Parton with 9 to 5, the film in which she made her acting debut alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 1980. A screening in memory of an artist who could never be confined to a single stage.

Judy, Violet and Doralee work for Franklin Hart, a boss who is as sexist as he is egotistical. He belittles his employees, blocks promotions and makes life particularly miserable for the women in his office. The three have had enough and decide to turn the tables on him, first in their fantasies and then increasingly at work.

9 to 5 combines office satire, slapstick and female revenge fantasy in a comedy that still feels remarkably relevant. Dolly Parton plays Doralee Rhodes, the smart secretary who is constantly underestimated and judged by her appearance. It is a role filled with the same warmth, wit and determination that made generations fall in love with Parton off screen.

Parton also wrote and performed the film’s iconic title song. She came up with its rhythm on set by clicking her acrylic nails together to imitate the sound of a typewriter. The song earned her an Academy Award nomination and two Grammy Awards and became one of the defining hits of her career.

With this In Memoriam screening, we celebrate Dolly Parton as a singer, songwriter, actress and unforgettable entertainer. One evening for Dolly, with Dolly on the big screen.
