SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
Hollywood, late 1920s. Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are two of silent cinema’s biggest stars. On screen, they are a beloved couple, although Don sees things rather differently outside the studio. When the first talking picture becomes a huge success, their studio decides that their latest production needs to talk too. That is easier said than done.
Don adapts well enough to the microphone, but Lina’s shrill voice and distinctive accent do not match the elegant image the studio has created for her. Young actress Kathy Selden is secretly brought in to replace her voice. While Kathy remains out of sight, Lina takes the credit.
Singin’ in the Rain is an energetic musical filled with dance, colour and impeccable timing, but it is also a very funny look behind the scenes of Hollywood. The film reveals how much panic, improvisation and invisible work can hide beneath an apparently effortless production. Technological progress creates new possibilities, but it can also make entire professions, careers and stars suddenly seem obsolete.
