The Departed (20th Anniversary)

Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson star in Martin Scorsese’s crime thriller The Departed.

The Departed is set in South Boston, where the police are battling organised crime. Young undercover officer Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) infiltrates the syndicate of mob boss Costello (Jack Nicholson). While Billy quickly gains Costello’s trust, hardened criminal Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is working within the police force as Costello’s informant. Colin rises to a powerful position within the Special Investigations Unit.

Both Billy and Colin become entangled in their double lives, constantly gathering information about the plans and countermeasures of the organisations they have infiltrated. When it becomes clear to both the criminals and the police that there is a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin find themselves in mortal danger. Each must uncover the other’s identity before it is too late.

Mac Brown, Kristin Hahn and Gianni Nunnari serving as executive producers and Joe Reidy as co-producer. Scorsese’s creative team includes director of photography Michael Ballhaus, production designer Kristie Zea, editor Thelma Schoonmaker and costume designer Sandy Powell. The score was composed by Howard Shore.
