One in ten people hears voices. In My Word Against Mine, named Best Dutch Documentary at IDFA, we meet five individuals living with this profound phenomenon. The film draws the viewer into their inner worlds. Each of them undergoes a groundbreaking treatment in which their inner voices are no longer suppressed, but instead invited to take part in the process.
A psychiatrist engages directly with the voices. Who are they? Why are they there? What do they want? Step by step, an intense and carefully guided journey unfolds, where confrontation and curiosity go hand in hand.
Director Maasja Ooms (Jason, Alicia, Rotjochies) weaves the different phases of this journey into a single mosaic, from initial resistance to gradual acceptance. The documentary offers a deeply moving insight into the defense mechanisms of the human mind. What at first seems unbelievable and alien gradually becomes recognizable and close.
Mijn Woord Tegen het Mijne paints a compelling group portrait, of both the protagonists and their voices, that fundamentally reshapes the way we view people who hear voices.
