In the town of Mariinka in eastern Ukraine, the film follows several young Ukrainians whose lives have been shaped forever by more than a decade of war and conflict in the Donbas. Natasha, a promising boxing talent, becomes a military medic. Angela, who lost her parents at a young age, survives by smuggling goods across both sides of the front line.

Meanwhile, brothers Mark and Ruslan become caught up in a Greek tragedy, finding themselves on opposing sides of the conflict.

Their youngest brother, Daniil, follows the war from afar, from the safety of his adoptive family in the United States. Through letters, video calls and charged silences, a deeply moving story unfolds about connection, national loyalty and the fault lines along which political conflict can tear even families apart.

Filmed on 16mm over a period of ten years, Mariinka begins long before the world witnessed Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, after which the town was almost completely destroyed. It is the long-awaited second feature film by Pieter-Jan De Pue, following his Sundance award-winning debut The Land of the Enlightened.
