Every line of dialogue is sung to the music of Michel Legrand, creating a fully composed musical that remains simultaneously a moving and realistic love drama. Catherine Deneuve achieved international breakthrough with her leading role, and the film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964. Additionally, it received five Oscar nominations, including for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Music.
