Jimpa
In her semi-autobiographical film, filmmaker Sophie Hyde (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) explores both inherited and chosen family ties. Starring Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Father) and John Lithgow (Conclave, The Crown), Jimpa is a heartfelt story about identity, family and belonging.
Filmmaker Hannah (Olivia Colman) travels to Amsterdam with her non-binary teenager Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) to visit her father Jim (John Lithgow). Affectionately known as “Jimpa,” he is delighted when Frances expresses a wish to stay with him for a year. The request forces Hannah to confront her own ideas about parenthood and responsibility.
While Jim encourages Frances to explore Amsterdam’s queer community and the freedoms that drew him there decades earlier, he must also reckon with the reality that the freedom he sought is not necessarily the same as the one his grandchild is searching for.
Jimpa was selected for both the Sundance Film Festival and the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Alongside its international stars, the film features Dutch actors Hans Kesting, Romana Vrede and Zoë Love Smith. As FirstShowing described it: “Heartfelt, warm, and tender… a film about openness.”
