IN FOCUS: MASAKI KOBAYASHI

BROET
Thu 29 Jan 19:30

We’ll soon be putting a remarkable Japanese director in the spotlight: Masaki Kobayashi.

Kobayashi (1916–1996) is one of the most powerful voices in Japanese cinema of the 1960s and ’70s. Film lovers know him for masterpieces such as Harakiri (1962), Kwaidan (1964), and The Human Condition (1959–1961), in which he explores human choices, moral dilemmas, and the tension between the individual and the system. His work is celebrated for its precise compositions, dramatic long takes, and his ability to convey emotional intensity through visual storytelling. A filmmaker whose work still feels strikingly relevant, both visually and thematically.

During the evening, Rick Timmermans will guide you through Kobayashi’s work in a short presentation, followed by a film screening. Which film? We’re keeping that a secret for a little while longer…
