With raising his nearly unruly teenage daughter and an ongoing lawsuit against his deceased son Brian's ex-girlfriend, construction worker Dan has plenty on his plate. Dan is an introvert; when problems become too much for him, he explodes in violent fits of rage. Completely unexpectedly, Dan receives an invitation to participate in a performance of the Shakespeare classic Romeo and Juliet.

The tough construction worker suddenly finds himself among all sorts of outcasts, theatrical types who enjoy discussing the need for "safe space" and "intimacy coordinator," concepts that must seem like something from another planet to Dan. Under the guidance of the snappy ex-Broadway actress Rita, Dan slowly learns to deal with everything pent up inside him. The process of theater—practicing, rehearsing, connecting with fellow actors, wrestling with the text, stammering iambic pentameters—helps Dan uncover the source of his grief.
