A Croatian woman living in Amsterdam feels like a foreigner everywhere in the world, and therefore at home nowhere. She travels through Europe to discover the secret of ‘feeling at home’ and finds it hidden within her family, the last people she would want to seek it from.

Tatjana tells herself that she is a resident of Europe or something. She has never lived anywhere long enough to feel at home, and now she is stranded in a notorious neighborhood of Amsterdam with her teenage son, who cringes at her Slavic accent and her inability to act Dutch. She is determined to break free from this and, as is her habit with everything, sets out in a thorough search for the sense of belonging, but this time with a camera.

She travels through Europe and knocks on the doors of family and friends who have settled somewhere as guest workers and expats. Along the way, she meets people who emigrated years ago but never actually left their villages, and people who have embraced their new existence without looking back. And two old German sisters who hold hands and have found their existence in each other.

When she visited her father, she found an answer she had not expected. An answer that views her life not as uprooted but as the result of what happened long ago out of love. Fragments of Belonging is a tragicomic documentary about migration, motherhood, and family patterns that reside within us, without us knowing them.
