Raoul is grieving after the death of his daughter Agnès. A daughter he didn't know well, as he was largely absent from her life. Now there's guilt, which Raoul tries to compensate for by finding out more about who Agnès was and what she did in her life. He travels to Marseille; Agnès has given him a few clues: she supposedly attended a taekwondo school, was working at a language center, and a law firm; none of this turns out to be true. Instead, the clumsy, awkward, tragicomic Raoul encounters Agnès's real life, which unfolded in Marseille's techno scene and drug scene.
Directors Marcia Romano and Benoit Sabatier depict both the farcical and moving aspects of Raoul's journey through the youth counterculture, accompanied by the stirring sounds of the post-punk-electro soundtrack (Froid Dub). The father figure, whose appearance bears some resemblance to Sacha Baron Cohen's creation Borat, proves to be both somewhat tragic and disarming.
Fotogenico premiered in the ACID section of the Cannes Film Festival. In the fall of 2024, the film was shown at the Leiden International Film Festival. Previously Unreleased is now receiving a national release.
