Canadian director Matthew Rankin's (The Twentieth Century) absurd, surreal comedy connects contemporary Winnipeg, Canada, with 1990s Tehran. Wes Anderson meets Abbas Kiarostami in Rankin's ode to Iranian cinema, which artfully interweaves dream and reality.

Introverted civil servant Matthew (Matthew Rankins) leaves Montreal to visit his sick mother in Winnipeg. Will he even make it to his birthplace? After all, everyone in the isolated Canadian metropolis speaks Farsi. Matthew himself gets caught up in two children's quest for glasses, while guide Massoud leads a group of bewildered tourists through the monuments and historical sites of Winnipeg.

Universal Language had its world premiere in the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival and was also shortlisted as Canada's entry for the Oscars.
