Akkerman draws from his books Sprekende juwelen (Speaking Jewels) and Een leven in juwelen (A Life in Jewels). He is endlessly fascinated not only by the beauty of jewelry and the craftsmanship involved in making it, but also by the stories behind each piece. For centuries, queens and movie stars have cherished these precious treasures, and he has endless insights to share about them—as well as about regional jewelry and the most impressive jewel designs in the world.
Jewelry says something about people—about power, love, and history. Preserving and passing on these stories is what he considers his life’s purpose.
Using slides, Akkerman connects the past with the present. He also reflects on recent events, such as the jewelry heist at the Louvre.
MARTIJN AKKERMAN (1952) is a jewelry historian. He studied at the vocational school in Schoonhoven and later worked for jeweler Fabery de Jonge and the Amsterdam auction house Mak van Waay. He serves as a jewelry expert for various art and antique fairs, including TEFAF.
As a regular expert on Tussen Kunst en Kitsch and Blauw Bloed, he has spent years sharing the stories behind remarkable pieces of jewelry.
