A French dance troupe gathers in an abandoned school building for the final rehearsal of a new performance. The choreography is ready, the music is loud and it is time to unwind. With a bowl of sangria in the middle of the room, the rehearsal space becomes a dance floor. Then the group discovers that someone has spiked the drink with LSD.
What begins as a party slowly spins out of control. Trust gives way to suspicion, conversations turn into arguments and the dancers become increasingly disconnected from themselves and one another. Nobody knows who drugged the sangria, who is still thinking clearly or how they are going to make it through the night.
Director Gaspar Noé does not treat Climax like a conventional horror film. His camera moves among the dancers as if it were part of the group and refuses to look away when the mood shifts. Long takes, intense colours and a pounding electronic soundtrack pull you deeper into the building. Meanwhile, the tightly rehearsed opening dance gives way to movement stripped of all control.
Experience Climax at Natlab during De Nacht van Strijp-S on 19 September. A film that begins on the dance floor and ends somewhere music, fear and bodies can barely be told apart.
