Working Residential Areas

Architecture Center Eindhoven x Natlab
Tue 21 Oct 19:30

During Dutch Design Week 2025, the Eindhoven Architecture Centre and Natlab will screen the film "Working Neighborhoods." In this documentary, architect and urban designer Eric Frijters explores the opportunities for combining workspaces and homes, in close proximity to each other. A combination he calls "Smart Urban Mix." During a road trip through the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, Frijters will explore this concept and talk with a variety of experts, including Merten Nefs, Kristian Borret, Leo van Broeck, Martine Gossuin, Gabin Jouquan, and Alessandro Gess, as they explore innovative ways to combine living and working in the city of the future.

His discoveries show that this combination is easier to achieve than often assumed. Successful examples have already been realized in Belgium and France, with homes built on top of workspaces. This results in an attractive and livable urban environment for a diverse group of people. To further encourage the development of the Smart Urban Mix concept, a new role for clients, governments, and designers is required. Their involvement can contribute to a more dynamic city, one that is more vibrant than ever before and promotes sustainable interaction and exchange. After the screening, we'll speak with Eric Frijters about his experiences with combining living and working, Dutch examples, and the future of the city...
