Une Femme Est Une Femme (65th Anniversary)

Jean-Luc Godard
RELEASE Thu 4 Jun

With Une Femme Est Une Femme, Jean-Luc Godard, the playful figurehead of the Nouvelle Vague, presented his idiosyncratic vision of the musical: a “neo-realist musical” that simultaneously pays homage to and critiques the American tradition, featuring Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Jean-Claude Brialy in top form.

Karina’s Angéla, a striptease dancer with a desire for a child, becomes entangled in a light-hearted yet sharply observed love triangle. With its exuberant colours, humour, and the beautiful score by composer Michel Legrand, the film shows Jean-Luc Godard at his most accessible, without losing his formal playfulness. On the occasion of its 65th anniversary, this sparkling key work in Godard’s oeuvre now returns to cinemas in a stunning 4K restoration.
