The Love That Remains

Hlynur Pálmason
RELEASE Thu 18 Dec

Anna and Magnus are getting divorced. Still, they regularly spend time together for the sake of their three children, Ída and the twins Þorgils and Grímur. Magnus works at sea and is often away from home for long periods of time. Artist Anna creates impressive works that do not receive the recognition they deserve. In search of meaning, both parents go their separate ways in this new, strange reality. But what happens to the love that remains after a breakup?

The Love that Remains is a tender and often surprisingly humorous portrait of an Icelandic family trying to navigate a divorce. As the seasons pass, and through intimate scenes and alienating symbolic moments, we see the bittersweet reality of fleeting love and shared memories. Hlynur Pálmason (known for Godland and A White, White Day) once again shot his latest feature film with his own children and let the beautiful Icelandic landscape play a major role. The Love That Remains premiered in Cannes, where the touching role of dog Panda was awarded the Palm Dog.
