The Beloved

Rodrigo Sorogoyen
RELEASE Thu 15 Oct

When an acclaimed film director returns to Spain after a thirteen-year absence to film his new movie, he unexpectedly offers the lead role to his estranged daughter Emilia, an actress whose career is struggling to take off. What initially seems like a chance for reconciliation quickly turns into an emotional minefield.

As father and daughter stand together on the film set, the lines between fiction and reality blur, and old wounds inevitably resurface. The Beloved is an intense father-daughter drama by Oscar-nominated director Rodrigo Sorogoyen (Las Bestias, Madre) that had its world premiere in the competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall) delivers one of the most nuanced performances of his career, with Victoria Luengo (The Room Next Door, Amarga Navidad) as a compelling co-star. With The Beloved, Sorogoyen tells a nuanced and poignant story about the dynamics between parents and children, the creative process, and the fine line between love and manipulation.
