It is 2006, and television host Chris is about to break through with a controversial new programme. Adult men who believe they have arranged an online meeting with a minor are lured to a house. Instead of a date, they find hidden cameras, a television crew and a host demanding answers.
The broadcasts become a ratings sensation. Chris becomes a celebrity, while millions of Americans watch the suspects being confronted with their messages and intentions. The programme claims to deliver justice, but the boundary between journalism, public humiliation and entertainment becomes increasingly difficult to define.
Primetime is inspired by the rise of To Catch a Predator and the presenter who became its public face. Robert Pattinson plays an ambitious television host who becomes increasingly entangled in the programme that made him famous. The cast also includes Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo and singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers.
Director Lance Oppenheim previously made documentaries about unusual American subcultures and people attempting to reinvent themselves. For his narrative feature debut, he brings that documentary eye to a story about fame, sensationalism and our fascination with true crime. Produced by A24 and Square Peg, Primetime was selected for the main competition at the Venice Film Festival.
