Soldier's Bones

When young journalist Alec Shimkin uncovers evidence of a large-scale American war crime in Vietnam, his revelation is silenced by self-censorship. Who decides which stories survive? This gripping investigation explores truth, power, and the price of exposing what others would rather keep hidden.

In 1971, young Newsweek reporter Alec Shimkin uncovers a secret American military operation in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta: Operation Speedy Express, during which large-scale war crimes were allegedly committed. In the wake of the 1968 My Lai massacre, he becomes convinced that this “Super My Lai” must also be brought to light.

For months, Newsweek suppresses his investigation—under pressure from the government and through self-censorship within the newsroom. What should have been a groundbreaking cover story is ultimately reduced to a brief, diluted article with little visible impact. The Vietnamese eyewitness testimonies that Alec painstakingly collected disappear from public view.

Shortly afterwards, Alec goes missing in Vietnam. Soldier’s Bones reconstructs his attempt to expose Operation Speedy Express—the story he never had the chance to finish himself. What vanished along with him? And what does his silence reveal about the ways stories are shaped, filtered, or suppressed, and about who gets to decide what is seen and what remains hidden?
