Silent Rebellion

RELEASE Thu 25 Jun

Switzerland, 1943. In a traditional Protestant mountain village, fifteen-year-old Emma works as a maid for a wealthy family. She hopes to fulfill her quiet dream of becoming a nurse by winning the village's virtue prize. But when a rich young man rapes her and she becomes pregnant, her world begins to crumble.

Desperate to find a way out without causing scandal, Emma sees marriage to local villager Paul as her only option. Yet as she struggles under the weight of social expectations and discovers a growing sense of self-worth, she begins to resist—her new role, the hypocrisy of her fellow villagers, and the soldiers who force war refugees back into occupied territory.

Silent Rebellion is a powerful drama about finding the courage to forge one’s own path in defiance of society’s suffocating norms. The film speaks with striking urgency to the present day, as women’s rights and bodily autonomy once again come under pressure.

Directed by Marie-Elsa Sgualdo in her feature-film debut, Silent Rebellion premiered at the Venice Film Festival. It was subsequently selected for numerous international festivals and won two major Swiss film awards.
