Céline Sciamma
Sun 11 Oct 16:10

In eighteenth-century France, painter Marianne is commissioned to create a wedding portrait of Héloïse. Because Héloïse refuses to pose, Marianne must study her by day and paint her from memory at night. As the portrait slowly takes shape, so does the bond between the two women. The screening is preceded by a short introduction from Alliance Française Eindhoven.

With Alliance Ciné, Alliance Française Eindhoven brings a little piece of France to Natlab every month. This edition features Céline Sciamma’s acclaimed love story Portrait de la jeune fille en feu.

At the end of the eighteenth century, painter Marianne travels to a remote island off the coast of Brittany. She has been commissioned to paint a portrait of Héloïse, which will be sent to her future husband in Milan. Héloïse, however, refuses to pose. Marianne is therefore introduced as her companion and must study her carefully during their walks together, painting from memory at night.

Marianne watches Héloïse, but Héloïse looks back. As the portrait gradually takes shape, so does the attraction between the two women. They know their time together is limited, giving every glance, touch and silence an added intensity.

In Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, Céline Sciamma explores desire, memory and the relationship between the person who looks and the person being seen. With little music and an extraordinary attention to faces, gestures, wind and fire, she creates a love story that begins quietly but continues to burn long after the final scene.

The film starts at 16:15. Alliance Française Eindhoven will provide a short introduction at 16:10. Spend a Sunday afternoon in France with a film that is not easily forgotten.
