NSFF | De Chomón, An Elusive Wizard

Sat 17 Jan 13:30

Silent film curator Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi delves into the work of film pioneers Segundo de Chomón and Julienne Mathieu. Together, they founded their own production company and created colourful, innovative and imaginative films that rivalled those of Méliès.

Segundo de Chomón is one of the most versatile film pioneers, though his work has not always received the recognition it deserves. Hired by Pathé to compete with the popularity of Méliès, De Chomón not only created magical and colourful shorts for Pathé, but together with his wife Julienne Mathieu, also founded their own production company in Barcelona: Iberico Films.

In recent years, in-depth international research led by Filmoteca de Catalunya has brought new insights into the lives and work of De Chomón and Mathieu, leading to new discoveries of formerly lost films. This greater understanding of their careers, such as his move to the Italian production company Itala, where he used his pyro technique knowledge for special effects, and the close group of actors who appeared in their films (such as Julienne’s sister, France Mathieu), helps to expand our knowledge of these pioneers and to admire their legacy even more.
