Revealing film about the life of a Taliban fighter and the tensions between his beliefs and his human desires.

Aboozar Amini, whose first feature-length documentary Kabul, City of the Wind opened IDFA in 2018, delves into the life of 23-year-old Samim—brother, husband, Taliban soldier—in Kabul, Between Prayers. The film paints a humanistic and complex portrait of a man who adheres to a fundamentalist ideology while struggling with human dilemmas and earthly desires.

Working at a checkpoint in Kabul, Samim stops a taxi with a drunk woman in the back seat and calms down two drivers involved in a collision. Meanwhile, he has doubts about his troubled marriage and his extremist beliefs clash with the unpredictable reality. Samim's fourteen-year-old brother Rafi also appears on camera. In intimate close-ups, he is asked if he is in love and what his favorite verse from the Koran is. His shy smile at the first question and his decisive recitation after the second reveal the contrast within him: the innocence of childhood and deep-rooted indoctrination. With his sophisticated structure and camerawork, Amini disrupts the comforting boundary we so readily draw between extremism and humanity.
