Game Changers | The Great Dictator

Charlie Chaplin
Mon 15 Dec 20:00

The Great Dictator (1940) is Charlie Chaplin’s first spoken film and a daring satire of fascism and the rise of dictatorships. Chaplin plays both a Jewish barber and the dictator Adenoid Hynkel, a clear parody of Hitler. With humor, sharpness and political courage, the film exposes the absurdity of totalitarian regimes. On December 15, Twan Arts will show why this film remains a true Game Changer to this day.

The Great Dictator is one of Chaplin’s most influential and courageous films. At a time when Hollywood was still hesitant to speak out about the political tensions in Europe, Chaplin deliberately chose to make a satire about fascism and the growing power of Adolf Hitler. The result is a film that combines sharp political critique with the humanistic vulnerability that makes his work so distinctive.

Chaplin plays a dual role: an anonymous Jewish barber searching for safety, and the dictator Adenoid Hynkel, a grotesque parody of Hitler. This mirror construction makes the film both absurd and strikingly relevant. With masterful slapstick, imaginative storytelling, and the famous globe dance, Chaplin creates a narrative that confronts while also inviting laughter at the absurdity of power.
