Film & Food brings great cinema and great food together. This edition takes us into the Italian-American underworld of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas.
Dinner is served at Natlab 90 minutes before the film begins. On the menu is Goodfellas Prison Pasta & Meatballs: pasta with tomato sauce and meatballs, inspired by the film’s famous prison dinner scene. A vegetarian version is also available. Behind bars, Henry and his fellow mobsters prepare an elaborate meal. Paulie slices the garlic impossibly thin, Vinnie keeps watch over the tomato sauce and, naturally, an argument breaks out over the correct number of onions. After dinner, head to the cinema for Goodfellas.
Ever since he was a child, Henry Hill has dreamed of becoming a gangster. Within the New York mob, he finds money, status and a family that lives by its own rules. Together with Jimmy Conway and the unpredictable Tommy DeVito, he steadily rises through the ranks. But however glamorous life at the top may appear, violence, drugs and paranoia are never far away.
Martin Scorsese follows Henry’s rise and fall at breakneck speed, with dark humour, a razor-sharp soundtrack and a camera that moves freely through nightclubs, kitchens and back rooms. Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci play men for whom loyalty is sacred, as long as it does not cost them anything personally.
A Film & Food evening with pasta, meatballs and one of the greatest gangster films ever made. Just remember not to put too many onions in the sauce.
