The life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) unfolds through the poisoned perspective of his contemporary and court composer Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham in the defining role of his career). In his bitter recollection, Salieri describes how, at the height of his fame, he is musically humiliated by the young Mozart, leading to an obsessive attempt to undermine his genius.
At the same time, Amadeus is an exuberant sensory spectacle, in which Mozart’s music, the theatrical staging, the lavish costumes, and the visual splendor of eighteenth-century Vienna merge into pure cinema.
The film won eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor, and now returns to theaters for the first time since its original release in its original theatrical cut, in a 4K restoration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
