Aïcha not only offers a glimpse into the life of the main character Aya but also exposes the tensions within Tunisian society. What would you do if you suddenly had the chance to start a new life with a clean slate?

Aya (Fatma Sfar) is in her twenties and works at a hotel on the edge of the Sahara. She lives with her parents and sees little hope for a promising future. Then the van she takes to work every day crashes, and she is the sole survivor. Aya sees this as a chance to start a new life and flees to Tunis. However, when she becomes involved in a police investigation during a night out, her new life in Tunis seems impossible. Aïcha premiered at the Venice Film Festival as part of the Orizzonti competition. Following UN FILS, director Mehdi M. Barsoui once again offers an intriguing look into the turbulent society of Tunisia.
