À pied d'œuvre is an intimate portrait of the price of artistic freedom and the vulnerability of a Parisian artist.
Director and actress Valérie Donzelli (L’amour et les forêts) made her competition debut at the Venice Film Festival with the true-story-inspired À pied d'œuvre (international title: At Work), where she won the award for Best Screenplay. This French drama is based on the autobiographical bestseller of the same name by Franck Courtes.
The film stars Bastien Bouillon (Partir un jour, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) as Paul Marquet, delivering a powerful and moving performance as a photographer who uncompromisingly chooses a life as a writer, embracing an existence on the margins of society. Supporting roles are played by André Marcon and Virginie Ledoyen, while Valérie Donzelli herself appears as Paul’s ex-wife.
