A humanitarian crisis has been simmering on the border between Belarus and Poland for a long time. Convinced of the promise of asylum in the EU, refugees fly from Moscow to Belarus. Belarus helps them to the Polish border, after which they are forced to cross the border by force. Once at the border in the Białowieża forest, the refugees become entangled in a geopolitical conflict in which a Syrian family, the activist Julia and border guard Jan are merely pawns.

Refugees that try to enter Europe via this route, end up in the treacherous forests that form the so-called 'green border' between Belarus and Poland. Belarus tries to undermine the EU by encouraging the border crossing, while Poland declines entry. And so the refugees end up in a coldm marshy no man's land, without food and medical care.
