20 days in Mariupol

Mstyslav Chernov
RELEASE Thu 26 Feb

The unimaginably cruel and bloody images of the countless dead and wounded by bombing and shelling in the Russian-besieged Ukrainian port city of Mariupol spread around the world in March 2022—thanks in part to the work of Ukrainian AP journalist Mstyslav Chernov. With great difficulty, he managed to send shocking and disturbing images, such as a pregnant woman on a stretcher from a bombed maternity hospital, out of the city, which had been cut off from the internet and electricity.

20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL offers an even more poignant and bewildering picture of the siege. The razor-sharp image quality of the video footage gives the viewer an almost three-dimensional experience: the camera follows Chernov as he enters damaged clinics, ad hoc mass graves, and the emotional reactions of doctors in operating rooms.

Although the bombings make the images jerky, everything remains crystal clear. In a soft voice-over, Chernov shares his personal emotions about the twenty days that turned an ordinary city into a shattered ruin.
