Opening exposition | Eindhoven Herzien

Mariet Wielders and Eric van de Ven
Thu 17 Sep 16:00

You know Eindhoven. Or at least you think you do. In Eindhoven Revisited, photographers Mariet Wielders and Eric van de Ven reconstruct the city from different moments, viewpoints and layers of imagery. The exhibition opens at Natlab on 17 September.

Exhibition Opening | Eindhoven Revisited

Eindhoven never stops changing. Buildings disappear, neighbourhoods take on new purposes and thousands of people move through the city every day. In Eindhoven Revisited, photographers Mariet Wielders and Eric van de Ven explore that constant movement. They do not simply document Eindhoven, but reconstruct it through their photography.

The exhibition opens at Natlab on Thursday 17 September.

Mariet Wielders’ work features familiar locations including the Evoluon, the Flying Pins, Eindhoven University of Technology, Strijp-S, the Sacred Heart Church and the railway station. She combines multiple photographs of the same subject into a single new image. The buildings remain recognisable, but lines begin to shift, moments overlap and movement becomes visible. Her photographs of the station in particular merge travellers and architecture into a city that never fully stands still.

Eric van de Ven focuses on locations including Strijp-S and Ketelhuisplein. He photographs each place from multiple angles before bringing those impressions together. Just as we consult different sources to form an informed view of a subject, Eric uses multiple perspectives to construct a new reality. Part of this series was previously exhibited at a photography festival in Bergamo.

The exhibition also includes work from his series Eindhoven in Development, in which the city’s history and its ongoing transformation come together within a single image. For Eric, a photograph is not an end product, but the starting point of a creative process. By altering his images digitally or physically, he creates a reconstruction rather than a straightforward record of reality.

Eindhoven Revisited is about more than buildings and cityscapes. The exhibition presents a city made up of memories, encounters, movement and continual change. An Eindhoven you will recognise immediately, but may never have seen quite like this before.
