De Vegan Veehouder | with Q&A

Kadir van Lohuizen
Tue 24 Mar 19:30

In the film De Vegan Veehouder (The Vegan Livestock Farmer), renowned photographer and documentary filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen follows Limburg-based poultry farmer Ruud Zanders. After the bankruptcy of his large-scale poultry farms, Ruud started a smaller and more sustainable operation.

After the screening, there will be a Q&A with director Kadir van Lohuizen and poultry farmer Ruud Zanders.

This new concept, Kipster, has since gained worldwide attention and is on the brink of an international breakthrough. Meanwhile, the farmer himself is increasingly questioning the very purpose of keeping animals for food. For his own consumption, he now avoids meat, dairy, and eggs as much as possible. Do we really need animals in the global food system?

Filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen carefully captures the internal struggle between ideals and reality within his frame. Are you doing enough if you’ve developed the best possible chicken farm for animal welfare and circularity? Or are you actually sustaining the system? What do activist George Monbiot and scientist Imke de Boer think of Ruud’s quest? And where do you stand?

The film was commissioned by Stichting The Food Revolution, with support from, among others, the Barth-Misset Fund. The tour is made possible in part by the Province of Limburg, Triodos Foundation, and Stichting Symbio.
