After years of estrangement, Lina receives a video message from her father, a migrant worker in Italy, in which he shows her his bruises. As a journalist, she instinctively knows what needs to be done, but as a daughter, the task is far more difficult. The man who caused her so much pain for years is now a victim of violence himself, and he turns to her for help. Armed with a hidden camera, Lina helps expose the exploitation of migrant workers while also confronting a pattern of domestic abuse that has haunted her family for generations.
The award-winning Tata, filmed in Italy, Moldova and Romania, is a raw portrait of a family locked in a relentless struggle against toxic masculinity. It is a deeply moving story of a daughter determined to break the cycle, for herself, for the child she is expecting, and even for the man who hurt her most. From director Lina Vdovîi and her partner Radu Ciorniciuc, known for the acclaimed Acasa, My Home.
