The Royal Ballet | La Fille mal gardée

Frederick Ashton
Wed 5 Nov and Sun 30 Nov

Lise, the only daughter of the widow Simone, is in love with the young farmer Colas, but her mother has much more ambitious plans for her. Simone hopes to marry her off to Alain, the son of the wealthy farmer Thomas. Since Lise is determined to marry Colas and not Alain, she does everything she can to outsmart her mother.

65 years after its premiere, The Royal Ballet is once again staging Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée. This affectionate portrait of village life combines a delightful sense of humour with brilliantly inventive choreography, serving as a clear love letter from Ashton to the English countryside. La Fille mal gardée invites us to enjoy the carefree rural life, accompanied by the cheerful music of Ferdinand Hérold and the colourful designs of Osbert Lancaster.
