Seven Samurai (digitale restauratie)

Akira Kurosawa
RELEASE Thu 26 Jun

Kurosawa's thrilling film epic tells the story of desperate inhabitants of a 16th-century village who hire seven samurai to protect them from bandits. The influential action-adventure film had a huge impact on later westerns and action films.

This monumental action-adventure film - featuring legendary actors Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura - weaves philosophy and entertainment, subtle human emotions and relentless action into a rich, evocative historical thriller and moral-political fable all in one. A village of rice farmers hires a group of samurai to defend them from marauding bandits.

For his incisive visual style and brilliant staging, Kurosawa used multiple cameras that enabled numerous unusual editing techniques. He skillfully manages to maintain the tension by giving the story an almost Shakespearean grandeur. Kurosawa would explore the line between good and evil in many of his films. Even in Seven Samurai, his first commercial success, there is only a thin line between the actions of the samurai and those of the bandits. 4K restoration by Toho.
