A journey through history, a confrontation with silence. In Tussen wal en schip, three grandchildren—Jip, Kyron, and Benjamin—take their Dutch-Indonesian grandparents back to the place where they first set foot on Dutch soil. With patience, love, and curiosity, they open up conversations about a past that remained unspoken for decades. How does this hidden history shape their identities today?

For many Indo-Dutch families, the colonial past remains a painful and often unspoken legacy. After Indonesia’s independence, thousands were forced to migrate, their stories tucked away, never to be spoken of again. Now, three young descendants take an important step to break that silence. Through meaningful conversations—marked by tenderness as well as confrontation—Tussen wal en schip weaves these personal journeys into a broader story of colonialism, migration, and intergenerational trauma.
