Studio Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters

Studio Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters is based in Klokgebouw, Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Together we do practical design projects, as well as autonomous work. Living with nature, history, colour and environment are the foundation of our work. We don’t design specifically for the industry or the consumer, but try to materialize or tell about the things we’d like to have around us or that fascinate us. The process of manufacture is an important tool in our design process. To understand how the end product is made gives us the opportunity to translate the idea in the best way and to be innovative.

The prints on the tables of Natlab were based on the final exam project ‘Bolted’ by Maarten created in 2006. The concept of the book came from his fascination for vegetable gardens and the thought that everyday things can be taken for granted.
Maarten used his own vegetable garden as a research field to study the growth and physical transformation of vegetables and herbs for one year. He documented the different stages of growth, with a main focus on the floral stage. Studio photographs of the plants founded the base of the book ‘Bolted’ published in 2008. For Natlab Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters used the photographical material as a basis for a collection of prints. Multiple plants were digitally merged to create printed center pieces for the table tops. Since the vegetables used in the prints are quite common, the duo hopes some of them can also be found as ingredients in the dished served by the restaurant of Natlab. This way the guests of the restaurant can not only taste their dish, but can also see what the ingredients look like, in what shapes they grow, what kind of flowers they have, etc.
