Director Damien Chazelle, known for Whiplash, La La Land, pays tribute to Hollywood during the Roaring Twenties, the time of abundant prosperity. Or so it seemed.

In the 1920s there was a big change in Hollywood: silent films were replaced by films with sound. And that meant the downfall of one and the rise of the other. In this film, the up-and-coming movie city where anything is possible is juxtaposed against the arid desert of Los Angeles. A lot of vices and damnations pass by, just like in the Biblical city of Babylon, after which the film is named.
