As a child, Kya is abandoned and has to save herself in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. Due to rumours about her as a 'swamp girl', she becomes more and more isolated, but when she meets two young man everything seems to change. A miraculous story about individual resilience and the wonder of the natural world, based on the eponymous bestselling novel by Delia Owens.

The smart and resilient Kya has lived her life in seclusion, afraid of what the people of Barkley Cove were thinking of her. When she does get in touch with two young men from the village, a whole new world opens up for her. But then one of the men is found dead, and of course, Kya is immediately designated as prime suspect. During the research, it becomes increasingly vague what has actually happened, and the many secrets that are being concealed by the swamplands are threatened to be exposed.
