Geert Jan Jansen managed to delude the whole art world for more than twenty years. His work is/was so convincing that even artists like Picasso and Appel themselves unsuspectingly wrote certificates of authenticity for paintings that Geert Jan made. But he doesn't feel guilty about that: "I am not an imposter, I am an reliever. I think I've taken quite some work off their hands."
Even today there are hanging artworks in museums all over the world of which no one would guess they were actually made by Geert Jan. The only reason he was exposed, is because of a spelling error in the certificate of authenticity for a work he made in the style of Chagall.
True Copy shows us the internal radar work of a complex man and uses it as a manual for revealing even more hypocrisy within the art world. What value does truth still have? And wouldn't it be more refreshing to sometimes go along with beautifully and well formatted lies?
