In this theatre adaptation of Kristien Hemmerechts' controversial novel 'De vrouw die de honden eten gaf', we discover shocking details from Martin's past and her relationship with 'the beast of Belgium'. In the book, that was published two years after the (conditional) release of Martin from prison, Hemmerechts tries to puts herself in Martin's shoes based on factual testimonies and documents, creating a profile for an apathic woman that, after a traumatic childhood and with a husband like Dutroux, still became mother of three children.
Theo d'Or award and Gouden Kalf winner Marie-Louise Stheins was fascinated by Hemmerechts' novel right from the start and decided she wanted to bring the story to the stage. In Julie van den Berghe, she found a director who dared to take on that challenge. And as Marie-Louise steps into the shoes of Michelle Martin, she gets under the spectator's skin and will definitely give you goose bumps.
