In 1961, a group of fearless scientists embarked on an expedition to the mostly untouched Italian region of Calabria. Hidden in the Pollino mountains, the group will try and research a still uncharted cave. For the first time ever, the speleologists lower themselves into the darkness of the cave and explore the bottom of the Bifurto Abyss, which at sevenhundred meters is one of the world's deepest caves. An old shepherd patiently watches them from a distance. Where he knows all the secrets of the environment, the scientists are literally in the dark. By throwing stones and lighted pieces of paper into the depths, they try to see and hear how deep this abyss actually is.
Michelangelo Frammartino created a unique cinematic experience with this film, that was already awarded the Jury's Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
