‘Hit the Road is Panah Panahi's fantastic feature film debut. Very clever how soul pain finds its way into a surprisingly original tragicomedy, interspersed with Iranian pop songs by exiled musicians’

Get in the car with a family of four, travelling through the wonderful, desolate wasteland of Iran. But between the loud singing and good-hearted bickering, more and more glimpses of sadness and pain come to the surface.

A father with his leg in plaster, a mother that keeps trying to smile and dance through her tears, a little boy bouncing through the car - both literally and metaphorically, and a quiet, reclusive elder son behind the wheel. While they all in their own ways try to hold on to memories, struggle with fears of their unknown future and worry about the sick dog in the back of the car, it slowly becomes clear that this road trip is not just a nice family excursion, but a farewell tour.

With an appropriate sense of humour and a soundtrack of banned Iranian pop music, Panah Panahi creates a sensitive portrait of a family desperately trying to postpone an approaching parting in this award winning debut.
