This adaptation of the eponymous novel by Graham Swift, on the secret affair of 22-year-old British maid Jane Fairchild and her wealthy neighbour, shows that not only women but also men could be caught up in conventional gender roles in 1924.

After Paul Sheringham returns from the battle field as the only of three brothers, he has high expectations and hopes of life: he wants to become a lawyer and is to be married in a few days to a daughter of the wealthy Nivens family, for whom Jane works. But Jane and Paul become secret lovers. Mothers Sunday is their last chance to meet up before the marriage takes place, as it traditionally is the one of the year on which all servents are given the day off. The day turns for the worse - which Jane will eventually use to develop into a successful writer.
