American couple Chris and Tony share a passion for film and are both writing a script. In search of inspiration, they spend the summer on Fårö, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. This is the place where legendary film director Ingmar Berman lived, worked and shot several films. Gradually, the lines between fiction and reality fade.

French director Mia Hansen-Løve drew inspiration from her own relationships for this film. It is very important to her that her partners share her passion for film. In the past she had a relationship with director Olivier Assayas and she is currently with filmmaker Laurent Perreau. In Bergman Island, we see this in the relationship of an American film-maker couple who retreat in the summer to Fårö, the Swedish island in the Baltic Sea that inspired director Bergman.
