Phil and George could not have been more different in character. Phil is charismatic, but intensely cruel. George is rigid and picky, but soft-heartened. Together they lead a ranch in Montana, where men call the shots, the most powerful cowboy ever - Bronco Henry - is still being revered and the modernising world of the beginning of the 20th century is kept at a distance. The brothers have always been dependent on and attuned to each other, so when Phil finds out that George is secretly marrying local widow Rose, he is furious. His revenge is directed towards Rose, who he wants to ruin completely by using her mild-mannered son Peter as his puppet.
